1927-‘28 - ‘Wings,’ a 1927 silent film about two World War I fighter pilot friends, was the very first Oscar Best Picture winner. Directed by William A. Wellman and released by Paramount Pictures, the movie starred Clara Bow, Charles “Buddy” Rogers, and Richard Arlen. It was the only silent film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture and also the Academy award for engineering facts in 1929
